Hong Kong

The city's physical setting is unparalleled- the northern edge abutting the waterfront, the southern edge ( less than a mile away) hugging a mountain slope. Hiking around Victoria Peak you can stare down at the tops of the 50-story skyscrapers below. On the other side of Victoria Harbour from Hong Kong Island, is the Kowloon Peninsula, (big cities with markets) where not much English is spoken. The most interesting place to stay in is Chungking Mansions, high rise complex which as known as a melting pot for many of the city's ethnic group. The overnight Willer Express Bus between Kyoto and Tokyo has seats that reclines 140 degrees and whose windows were covered by floor-to-ceiling Velcro fastened curtains to keep out all light.

Ballroom

Berns Salonger is an opulent 19th century hall adorned with three bulking chandeliers and a whole lot of history. Swedish writer August Strindberg immortalized this place in his 1879 novel "The Red Room," and 130 odd years later, its breathtaking architecture is filled with dancing swedes, blinking strobes and a pop star at the height of her fame. This is Stockholm, a global beehive of 21st century pop, where Swedes treat their music with the reverence it deserves. In recent years, Scandinavia's largest country has churned out some of the most finely crafted, detail oriented pop on the planet. The DJ's are encyclopedic, and the bands can be brilliant.

Hotel/Balsam

The Balsam's Grand Resort Hotel is just a stone's throw from Canada in New Hampshire's Great Northern Woods. An 8,000-acre enclave at the foot of the Dixville Notch, a pass through the White Mountains that has long been used as an east-west trade route, it is in fact a little world of its own. Originally a summer resort, with two golf courses (one designed by the legendary Donald Ross), a 16-acre man made lake (dug in 1898), hiking and biking trails and more. It's now a year round operation, with skiing, snowshoeing, skating, snowmobiling, and wine tasting. And almost everything is included in the nightly rates. The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel has activities for skiers, hikers and skaters but is also a perfect place to read by the fire.

Barbados

Barbados is the easternmost Caribbean island off the coast of Venezuela. George Washington visited Barbados in 1751. The island is 166 square miles about 2 1/2 times the size of Washington DC, and about as difficult to get around by car, with driving on the left ( Barbados was a British possession until independence in 1966) and many roundabouts or rotaries to negotiate. There are as many rum shops as there are churches in Barbados, and there are a lot of churches. The rum shops are the best places to sample local food and drink. The chattel houses are small wooden homes set on blocks rather than on more permanent foundations. The George Washington home is restored as a heritage site on the northern edge of the capital. On the rugged and less populated east coast of the island is the strikingly beautiful fishing village of Bathsheba, with white sand beaches stretching across a coastline of erosion-shaped rock formation. No wonder Washington slept here.

New Tokyo

Take in all of Tokyo's vastness from high up with a visit to the Tokyo Tower which offers a panoramic view of all the sprawl. Tokyo from the ground is best seen with a visit to the Shibuya neighborhood. Shibuya is quintessential Tokyo, where neon lights, electronics shops and rivers of pedestrians are the defining features. Be sure to stop by Shibuya Crossing, the city's answer to Times Square in New York. One of the best parts about Tokyo is the food - its abundance, quality and affordable ability.

Old Tokyo

One of the first stops for budget-minded travelers should be the sprawling Tsukiji fish market. You can spend hours roaming the market's corridors, ice troughs full of arm-sized fish, and chowing down on some of the freshest sushi on the planet. It's best visited early in the morning when the vendors are still well-stocked. The Meiji Shrine was constructed 90 years ago under Emperor Meiji, who led the way in opening Japan to the rest of the world. The gardens, lily ponds and temple grounds are a pleasant respite from noisy Tokyo. The Asakusa temple is an excellent budget shopping area, where the sprawl of small shops offers an abundance of inexpensive Japanese goods. Round out your tour of old Tokyo with a visit to the Imperial Palace in the city center.

Tokyo

One of the most fascinating things about Tokyo is the way it combines both the ancient and the modern. Take the metro to the Chiyoda Ward in Central Tokyo and you'll fine yourself surrounded by a tangle of glass and steel skyscrapers - a pavilion of neatly trimmed grass and the hulking stone walls of the Imperial Palace. Much of the city is remarkably affordable for budget travelers. Tokyo has one of the finest underground train systems in the world. It's cheap, safe and fast.
